Saturday 21st March

2009 Challenge Fund (£14520 - £600 in play accounted)

Current stake - £120

Racing today.

As a Kalahari King fan I have to be in Shatabdi's camp today. Their race was one of the most eye catching of the early season and I've pretty much followed it ever since. Slipperytoad is off to Lingfield and I'll post his thoughts on the card in the comments section below. Of course the narrative here is all about Matsunosuke, and it seems obvious to me that this is Matsunosuke's day!
Let's hope Toad gets all his money back and more. And finally Ruby riding for Quinn is eye-popping and whilst Corals are following the formbook and are keen to lay the horse, I can't help having a dabble.

Shatabdi £120 at 7/1
Matsunosuke £80 at 10/3
My Immortal £50 at 8/1
£50 treble at around 270/1

Football and a quiet day for me (see friday for draws etc). Hope John will forgive me – but
Bournemouth £120 at 4/5

Pampling has missed the cut in the golf and normal procedures mean I'll throw a score at Fasth now just in case.

Barking Bets (Banked £1375/Current fund £2330 – 1 bet in play unaccounted)
Current stake - £230.

4:20 Haydock a possible, and maybe England in the rugby. We'll see.

  1. Off to leafy lingers tomorrow. Could you post the following on the blog?

    2.05 Sportingbet.com Hever Sprint Stakes (listed), 4yo plus, 5f, Class 1

    Shortlisted: Matsunosuke, Arganil

Ah my old nemesis Matsunosuke. Over the winter he and I have locked horns on five occasions. When I lay him he wins, when I back him he loses. Hopefully I’ll get a picture of him as we eyeball each other pre-race in the paddock!

His recent defeat was due to the fact that the flat surface and tight bends of Wolverhampton does not match his hold up running style. Although I knew this at the time it didn’t stop me getting suckered into backing him!

Today he gets the fast pace he craves for courtesy of the other short listed runner (and stranger) Arganil.

Progressive in profile, unfortunately as a need to lead horse he’s got a wide draw and others who like to set the pace between him and the rail; alias I predict when the gates open that cup of petrol in his tank is going to be used up trying to get to front

    Matsunosuke @ 2/1 or better

    14:35 Sportingbet.com Spring Cup (listed), 3yo only, 7f, Class 1

Shortlisted: Damien, Elnawin, Doncaster Rover, Five Star Junior, Tobond

Lots of All Weather debutants to oppose, however the sires of Doncaster Rover, Five Star Junior, and Tobond do well on this surface so might form part of my exacta with Damien, Elnawin and/or worth a small speculative punt if I sniff any market support on course.

    15:05 Sportingbet.com Winter Derby (group 3), 4yo plus, 1m 2f, Class 1

Shortlisted: Premio Loco, Re Barolo, Without A Prayer, Bronze Cannon, Suits Me, Scintillo,

I’m not convinced by the recent runs of Re Barolo, Suits Me and Scintillo. A five runner race, uncontested lead for Suits Me ending in a blanket finish at the line, they all can’t be that good and they all face different race conditions today..

It always takes a few months for the Godolphin horses to acclimatise when they return from Dubai. Without A Prayer is opposed for this reason (been running in the Dubai Carnival)

With doubts about the favorite Premio Loco staying the distance, Bronze Cannon is unexposed and had to contend with interrupted runs in his last two races when making his final challenge. 3rd time lucky?

Bronze Cannon @ 6/1 or better

    16:15 At The Races Handicap, 4yo plus, 1m 4f, Class 3,

Shortlisted: Distinctive Image, Sgt Schultz, War Of The Roses, Confidentiality,

A career best performance after a break equals “bounce” material so cross out Distinctive Image.
Sgt Schultz ran here last year and is back to the scene of his last win after a spell in Dubai. Has he re-acclimatise to our weather yet? War Of The Roses needs to up his game again. The step up in trip might suit Confidentiality based on sire stats. He might be worth another chance after a poor effort last time out.

War Of The Roses, Confidentiality @ 4/1 or better

    16:50 Attheraces.com Handicap, 4yo plus, 7f, Class 2

Shortlisted: Aeroplane, Atlantic Story, Abbondanza, Orpsie Boy, Al Muheer, Thebes, Capricorn Run

There are a number of imposters (6f runners) trying their hand at 7f . The race is likely to be ran at a fast pace so lets stick with those that can get the distance and are not handicapped to the hilt..

Abbondanza, Capricorn Run @ 7/1 or better
