Sunday 22nd March

2009 Challenge Fund (£14235 - £300 in play accounted)
Current stake - £120

My first bad Saturday for a while. Still, Fulham won!

I did get some money back from Ronan O'Gara being top points scorer and the Sheffield Wednesday draw, but otherwise it was a long slow death.

Liverpool's price is terrible today, and they may move shorter during the day. It's true Villa look like a team that have hit the wall but even factoring that in would leave you at more like 1.66 and that would be overlooking Livepool's inability to put teams away at Anfield this season. I was attracted to the idea of Villa with a goal start, but it's true they may just cave in, particularly if conceding an early goal like last week. I'm left pondering.

Barking Bets (Banked £1375/Current fund £2350 – 1 bet in play unaccounted)
Current stake - £230.

Took England in-running for peanuts yesterday.

    Southwell 3.55

Shorlisted: a. Smarty Socks, b. Royal Dignitary, c. White Deer, d. Autumn Blades

Smarty Sock put up a smart time last time after recovering from a poor start. What was notable about his performance was his challenge along the far rail in the final 3 furlongs, no mean feat for Southwell and therefore he’s worthy of favoritism.

Of the Nicholls runners, the 9yo Royal Dignitary is the stables main hope based on “jockey bookings” as the pundits would say.

As top weight he needs to be head and shoulders above the rest. I’m not fully convinced!

All of his wins have been on straight courses, he's only scored once on the All Weather and that was in a Class 6 claimer. However with all that said, the Nicholls yard is flying at the moment so he cannot be dismissed lightly.

Autumn Blades though winning last time out, is in over his head his this crowd. White Deer’s overall record does not impress however he’s well drawn.

Smarty Socks @ 2/1 or better

The following exactas are paying over 20/1 (based on Corals early prices)

    AB/ABC (6 lines)

Psst! Just received a tip! Look out for The Nicholls stable cat who is running in a race later this week!

Fortunately for me I had a small betfair nibble on Royal Dignitary to cover loses for a small profit..

  3. That Liverpool price doesn't look so terrible now !

Toad, what did you think of Matsunosuke trying to run up the rail Saturday? Very strange when he seems to have won all his races from the slingshot wide and late manoeuvre so successful at Lingfield.

Either down to an extended dry spell or other factors to be honest Toots even if Matsunosuke was at the top of his game his running style was against him Saturday as nothing was coming from well off the pace to land a blow. On another day and a different surface texture who knows. As I wrote previously, Lingfield is a tough gig

BTW: Keep an eye on Red Somerset over 7f/8f in the coming weeks who clocked a decent effort 2nd in the 4.50. Another casualty of Lingfields final furlong twilight zone that interrupts winning efforts due to bumping and barging between horses.
